Reflection 8

It was a long internship vacation I had and I really missed my students showing up to the office and seeing everyone once again was exciting because it has been a long time. At the office I worked on the agenda for today’s SAS class, and what I planned for my students. I was very excited about the day, and working with my students once again. I also drove to internship for the first time in my car. At the school after school everyone caught up with anything new that has been going on, and we discussed what work we have gotten done, what’s missing, so I was very upset about that. I brought a camera in, and took pictures of the classroom and the students, and how they were working. Those pictures are going to be used for a PowerPoint that I’ll create for my exhibition, or even a college poster. These pictures are pictures that I will keep forever to hold and save, because they’re wonderful memories that I shared with this students. It makes me feel good looking at them, and knowing that I had a group of students listening to me and looking up to me and supporting every work I had for them. We’ve been working hard and as a team, and I like the fact that they like me not only as a teacher, but also as a leader and a friend. I remember starting this program and thinking that I don’t know what I’m doing and how will I get through this. Things started off really tough for me, and I was always nervous about how each class will go. It took me a long time to get in that comfort zone of going to SAS, and knowing what I’ll be doing, how things will go, and how I felt. Believe it or not, these children scared me, they had me nervous, they never tried to break me down but I always felt the pressure and the tension. Students liked me a lot, because I was young and down to earth like they were. I had trouble dealing with that, and not having them push it further, and not having them take advantage of that. I wanted them to feel like I was the cool teacher that everyone got along with and was very friendly, ask me for any help or anything, but I also wanted to get the respect I deserved at the same time. There were times when a student attempted to disrespect me, and I didn’t like it at all, because I’m not just your friend, I’m our teacher and I’m older than you. I took that student aside from everyone else, and talk to him about it. I asked him that I was getting the impression that he didn’t like me very much from the way he was treating me, and I told to let me know because I’m not comfortable with that, and it’s not right. He just told me that he felt like I was treating him and the other boys in class differently from the girls. Honestly, I don’t think I ever did that but, I respected his opinions. I told him that from now on in class, things will be clearer for everyone, and I will treat everyone the same, and notice when anyone is doing something wrong. After we talked about it, he agreed to his part, I apologized and so did he and we both started all over. Ever since, things between him and me in class worked differently, on a better level. That’s the way I wanted things to be, I didn’t want any student to give me a hard time, or myself give anyone a hard time.

Reflection 7

This is the last week of vacation for me, and next week I return to internship. I can’t wait to go back because things have been less busy for me and boring. I guess I could say that it was good because I got to finish school and homework earlier, I worked more at my job, and I got some more time to relax and finish what I have to do. The thing is I like being busy all the time, having a planned week schedule, and rushing to accomplish a million things at once. Also because I miss my students, I miss being at the office and helping the administrators, also sitting and doing and doing my own paper work, and I want to return to all the school after school excitement. I get such a good feeling after the end of every school after school session. It’s a feeling of accomplishment and success. I want to go back to internship to get that feeling once again. My plans for my students when I return are to finish the writing portion of the project, so we can begin creating the scrapbooks. I want them to have fun now because they have been working so hard, and have done a lot of writing. I feel like every time I’m in class with these students, they continue to impress me with the work. They know how to write, and their writing is improving at the same time. At my exhibition, ill remember to mention that to everyone. They knew how to grab a reader’s attention with a first sentence; they improved their grammar, and their punctuation. They feel comfortable more and more each time they shared and read something out loud to the class room. They know how to participate in class, because they know it will help them for the future and when they enter high school.

EXCEL ROLLING DICE!

This is a chart of all my internship hours, weeks, and the date! I put it all into excel showing my name all the number of weeks, each date that i have gone to, and the time i have gone in and out, and also the total of hours!
This is my cookie chart and bar graph! This was a very complicated assignment to do, it took alot of links to read through carefully, and alot of steps to do to finish it. Once i was done with it, i uploaded it on digital image and cropped it, so it can be viewed on my blog.

This is my numbers chart, this had to be the most simplest and quickest assignment i have done. I placed it into my excel, then I uploaded it onto digital image and cropped it and made it smaller so it can be viewed on my blog.

Reflection # 6

This is the first Wednesday that I do not go to internship because Wheeler school is on spring break vacation, will includes Summer Bridge. Which gives me a lot of time to get my internship work organize, get my school work done earlier so I can get more sleep after leaving work very late. I need a lot of time to think about what I want to do and bring the students, and how I want them to create their scrapbooks. I really want them to have the options of having many different materials and things to use to make the books creative. I have a lot of internship and exhibition stuff to work on and due meanwhile; having this break from internship is really helpful for me. As much as I don’t want internship to end, I can’t wait until we get to the ending of these scrapbooks, and I want to see what these students come up with by using their imaginations. For the next class we are going to write the summer bridge section, which means they write a paragraph summer bridge related only. Like they can write about their favorite summer bridge memory or day, or they can write about why they love Summer Bridge so much, and what makes the program different from any other program. Hopefully that same day we can get that done, so we can do the last section of the scrapbooks. That’s when they do a dedication page, or a quotation page. They can write one or more of their favorite quotes, also explaining what the quote means and why they like the quote so much. Or they also get the option of writing a dedication page, dedicating their scrapbook to someone special, someone who means something, and they reason why they dedicate their page to that person.

Reflection #5

Today was a great morning; I had already explained to my supervisor that I had an outline of my exhibition presentation and how it would go. She thought it was really good with how it was going, but asked what I was going to do with all the work we worked on thus far. I told her that my teacher still said it was good information and research that I can put in my portfolio anyway. Then her only concern was what I would do for the Wednesdays mornings that I am in the office, because usually that’s what I would be working on, and I told her I wanted to still interview her and ask her some questions, and that I would go from there. Then I took the time to come up with many questions I wanted to ask her, and we went somewhere to have time for her to answer them. We talked about what it took for her to become director to a program like Summer Bridge; we talked about what the program means to her, what it’s about. We talked about the hardest part of her job, what she loves about it, and all kinds of questions like that. We got through many, but unfortunately didn’t have time to get through them all. Even though that’s a good thing, because it’s something we can continue working on for the next time I go to the office. It came time for school after school, and I love how the class session went. We got through the future paragraph, and they successfully did the silent writing time! I was so glad; we talked about so much covered a lot of stuff, did a lot of sharing, and talked about what was going to happen when we come back from vacation, because today was the last day until two weeks of vacation! I explained to them that when we get back I was going to begin taking pictures of them working and of us all together because I was going to use it for a PowerPoint, so that’s something they already know and will be ready for, I’m excited and can’t wait!

Reflection # 4

What an improvement in today’s SAS session! In the office this morning I wrote an outline to what I was going to say to my students today, before beginning to work. I wanted the point to get across so they can understand how serious I am. I even had a talk with one of my students that had given me a hard time before. We had a quick discussion, he expressed himself and I also had a few words to say. Overall, we let things out, and resolved the issue, and I’m glad that we worked it out. I explained to them that from now on we would have 15 minutes of silent writing, which they have to complete a paragraph of writing silently. This will pick up the pace of getting more work done, and control the noise level. As a class, we did brainstorming and topics on the board, and then they all completed a paragraph. As they worked, I walked around, did some reading, and helped them edit. It was silent, and I was so proud of myself for accomplishing that. I’m learning that you can’t be very generous and nice all the time to the students. Like I can’t please them all the time and just let them take control of what to say and do in class, that up to my team teacher and I only. Sometimes you have no choice but to set rules so everything can balance the right way. If I would’ve never created the silent writing time with the students, they noise level would’ve never decreased. Since I took control and set the rules of the class now, that’s when they listen and know what they are expected to do. This is a strategy that I will use from now until they end of the School after School program. Because of the silent writing, most of the students finished their writing and on time. I even read most of the writings, and they were really good. Each student seemed really focused, and they concentrated really well on what they were writing about. When someone had a question they raised their hand like they’re supposed to as well. I was impressed with them and myself, I hope that it was just a one day thing; I hope that this works for ever class session now. Because it’s really helpful to have the classroom in more peace, calm, and having everyone well behaved. It works out perfectly if they give me that silent writing time, and I give them the free time at the end of the class.

Reflection# 3
Internship was pretty rough today. The students seem to be too excited, and not wanting to quiet down when my team teacher and I ask them too. I had trouble with two students that didn’t want to do any of the work. It was difficult to get their attention, and that leaded to not having today’s lesson completed. I felt very unsuccessful about it, and I know that I’m going to need to do something to change that. I need to find a way to get them more settled, quiet down, and complete the work that I’m giving them. After the session, I had a quick talk with my master teacher about it. She gave me some good advice and ideas for next class, and the rest of the classes. What I plan to do is have them silent, when it comes to the writing time that they’re doing, and to talk while they’re doing their progress tracking sheets. We’ll see how it goes for next class. This is a new strategy that will help them get more of their writing done, that way we can catch up and be on top of things and the work more. Because if I just let them talk all the time during class, they won’t get much work done, and that means that we will always be behind. That isn’t good because there isn’t much time to waste; each day is limited on what needs to be done, because we don’t have much SAS sessions left to actually create these scrapbooks. My goal is to get the writing portion done already so that way we can begin creating the actual books. I still need students to bring in enough pictures, re-edit and re-write, draw, cut, color, and have all the right materials they need to make the scrapbooks. Having them more silent, will improve the work they get done in class for the day. I really don’t like how today went, one of my students isn’t even interested in any of the work. She told me that it was boring and that she didn’t like the whole project idea at all. I tried many times to explain to her why it’s important to do projects like this, and what she will gain as a student from creating the scrapbook. I tried many times to get her to write something and do something, and she refused. I got nothing out of her, and I know that I am going to have to after bring it to Rameka’s (program director), attention. I don’t understand why she doesn’t want to do anything, I don’t think that there’s anything wrong with it, and I’m sure that it’s not the way she acts in school. A lot of the other students told me that she was like that all the time with a lot of different teachers, and that it’s just the way she was, talking to her wouldn’t change anything. This worries me, it’s just something I don’t like, and I will talk to her about it next class and see how she feels about it.
Reflection #2

Today was my second day of my internship in the wheeler office. I arrived and began working on my summer bridge (also internship) SAS work lesson plan for my students. Just working on what I was going to say on how I was going to present them the new final project I have for them to do from now until SAS finishes, which is may. After I was done working with that, I watched my internship advisor go over her e-mails also, and then we worked on my exhibition/ internship outline. It’s basically a process plan that we are organizing, that is preparing me for my exhibition. She gives me questions, I explain them and break them down, and those questions follow up with more questions. It’s really interesting because it makes me feel ahead and on top my game. We write down all the information we have, and write down all notes. I take all my notes, organize them together, look at them, and checked to see what I can edit, fix, or change. After being done in the office, we head over to the next part of my internship which is school after school (SAS), where I teach literacy to eighth grade students, and my internship advisor is the program director. SAS was once again a success, because I introduce the project to them, and they really liked the idea, they were excited. I started off by explaining the project to them, and letting them know what materials and work they will need for it, how creative it’s going to be, what it will help them improve and work on, all the sections and topics to it, how I will give them a reward for their accomplishments, and how they will present it in front of all Summer bridge on the very last day of school after school. The must’ve been the only part they didn’t like, was presenting in front of everyone besides their own family. Other than that they really like the project and the ideas, and the surprise I will have for them at the end. I am also very excited about this, because I’ve been working really hard with my master teacher on it, and I feel really good about its outcome. Then I passed out journals to them, where they will be writing all of their work in, all based on the project. We started working on the first section, which was about their past, childhood, how they grew up or anything internship that they can remember and want to share. For a mini-lesson I did an example of a paragraph on the board. We also did bullet points of things I do not want to see in their paragraphs, and what they will be editing mostly. Then I gave them a couple of minutes to work on their first paragraph on their own, so we could share it as a class at the end of the session. I heard mostly everyone’s, and they were really amazing. I feel like their writing showed a lot of feeling, and they were clear. What I like the most is that everyone started off with a different first sentence, and all paragraphs were unique. I can’t wait for the next SAS, so we can continue the process, and work our way up to making that scrapbook. When the session was over, my team teacher had candy for the students. When they were dismissed, all teachers had a debrief meeting about the day, and I was ecstatic to share how great my day went with the students.
Reflection #1

Even though I have already began my internship back in October, today was the actual first day of internship. Which is where I got to be in and work with the summerbridge program directors, in their office? My internship is Summer bridge, and I teach 8th literacy at the school after school program, summer bridge Saturdays, which is a day to spend more time with all Summer bridge students, get to know them better, and it’s creative day that has a theme that students can be entertained and also learn from. Since school said that we have to be at internship from morning to afternoon on every Wednesday and complete 90 hours, Summer Bridge is not every Wednesday, and it’s only from afternoon to evenings for three hours. The Saturdays are in the morning for about 6 hours, but there are only five. That’s when I came with the brilliant idea to be working with the summer bridge administrators at the Wheeler school and get a sense of what happens behind the scenes. Today, I did photo copies for Rameka, and I helped her get all SAS work and papers organized for the students and the teachers. After that I did some summer bridge work on my own, being in the office was a lot of fun. I feel like I have many benefits from this, because I always feel on task with internship and Summer Bridge. I get all my work done, and learn a lot from Rameka and what she does, and also I have her guidance for help when I need her, she’s there. Then we went out for lunch and she took me to a Chinese restaurant to eat. While eating we discuss my goals, what I want to accomplish for internship, and the things I will say and present for my exhibition. I feel so ahead with all the work and notes we took down, I know that she will prepare me for exhibition. I feel proud of myself and everything I have done thus far already, and I really appreciate everything she has done for me, I don’t know what I would do without her support. We agreed that every internship day, we will take notes, brainstorm, and do more observations, communications, and connection. Write everything down and also break it down for exhibition day. I feel so ahead, and it’s a real good feeling. After eating, we headed to Summer Bridge School after school (SAS). We had a BEE, which is a literacy and numeracy competition within the whole summer bridge community. I was happy because I haven’t seen my students for about two months, so we talked about what we did over vacation, and what we did on the holidays. We caught up on things, and we had new progress tracking sheets for them to fill out, which tells us how they are doing in school, what they are learning, and what they want to learn also. The BEE was so much fun, that the time just flew by, and no one noticed. The students were then dismissed, and all teachers had a debrief department meeting. At the meeting we talk about our students, how the class went today, and what we plan to do for the next class. Since all literacy teachers have different projects to have them do, we discussed how we were going to introduce the projects to them at the next SAS session. We are all excited for what they will say, and were ready to make the project a success.
